In a recent study by e-commerce platform Ubuy, the UK stands out as one of the world’s most digitally focused countries in terms of consumer spending habits. Despite the challenges faced by the retail sector post-pandemic, the study underscores the enduring significance of e-commerce in modern retail.
According to Ubuy’s research, the global average per capita e-commerce spend amounts to $496 annually, representing approximately 5.7% of the average worldwide annual income. Notably, the UK distinguishes itself by allocating 7.2% of its annual income to e-commerce, securing the ninth position globally in terms of online purchase volume.
What makes this finding particularly noteworthy is that the UK is the sole Western country featured on the list, which includes both less developed markets and two major e-tail-focused countries. China claims the second spot, with consumers dedicating 11.6% of their average income to online spending, while South Korea secures the fifth position with an 8.4% share.
Surprising entries on the list include Lebanon (13.5% of average income), Iran (11.6%), and Kyrgyzstan (10.3%) in the top three spots. Following South Korea are Sudan (9.1%), Moldova (7.9%), Mongolia (7.5%), and Bhutan (7.1%), completing the top 10.
