SNike Files Lawsuits Against New Balance and Skechers for Alleged Patent Infringement in Sneaker Technology

In a strategic move to defend its cutting-edge sneaker technology, industry giant Nike has taken legal action by filing federal lawsuits against rivals New Balance and Skechers. These lawsuits, filed on Monday, assert claims of patent infringement concerning Nike’s groundbreaking technology used in the creation of upper portions of sneakers.

The legal complaints specifically allege that various athletic shoes from New Balance and sneakers from Skechers are in violation of Nike’s patented «Flyknit» technology, a game-changer in the realms of running, soccer, and basketball footwear.

Nike, headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon, has a history of protecting its innovations, having previously litigated against major players like Adidas, Puma, and Lululemon for similar Flyknit patent infringements. While Adidas and Puma have settled, Nike’s case against Lululemon remains ongoing.

As of now, representatives from Nike, New Balance, and Skechers have not provided immediate comments on the lawsuits initiated on Monday.

Nike’s Flyknit technology, known for utilizing high-strength fibers to craft lightweight, supportive, and breathable uppers, serves as a cornerstone for the brand’s high-performance footwear. The lawsuits emphasize the significance of this patented technology, enabling Nike to reduce material usage and waste in the manufacturing process.

The complaint against Boston-based New Balance, filed in a Massachusetts federal court, targets various product lines, including Fresh Foam and FuelCell, alleging violations of Nike’s patent rights. Concurrently, Nike’s lawsuit against Manhattan Beach-based Skechers in Los Angeles singles out models like Ultra Flex and Glide Step for alleged patent infringement.

In its legal pursuit, Nike seeks unspecified monetary damages and court orders to permanently prohibit New Balance and Skechers from engaging in further patent infringements.
