Revolutionizing Sustainability: GOTS Unveils Game-Changing Certification for Small Players

In a groundbreaking move, the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) introduces a pilot initiative to democratize and simplify its certification process for smaller players in the textile industry. The innovative «controlled supply chain system» (CSCS) aims to break barriers, making GOTS certification more accessible to small and medium-sized operators by streamlining audits and controls.

Designed to empower businesses, the CSCS offers a unique approach where a supply chain of eight to thirty small-scale facilities, each with at least twenty employees, can be considered a unified certified entity. This initiative seeks to minimize financial and administrative burdens, making sustainable certification achievable for all.

Already proving its success, textile manufacturer Sankei Meriyasu, a centennial legacy supplier for brands like Sainteté, Eiji, and Dubble Works, obtained GOTS certification through this streamlined system. The pilot project will undergo a comprehensive review and evaluation, setting the stage for future optimizations.

«The controlled supply chain system has the potential to revolutionize GOTS certification, empowering small operators in the organic textile supply chain,» notes GOTS Managing Director Rahul Bhajekar. «Our successful pilot project is overcoming obstacles and opening up opportunities. We’re eager to refine and validate CSCS requirements for full implementation across all markets.»

As of the close of the 2022 financial year, GOTS boasts 13,549 certified production sites in 84 countries, marking a remarkable 10% growth. With a strong presence in India, Turkey, China, and Bangladesh, as well as emerging markets like Italy, Germany, and France, GOTS continues to lead the charge for sustainability. Partnering with 24 certification bodies, GOTS ensures global standards for environmentally friendly textile production.
