In a significant move toward craftsmanship and innovation, LVMH Métiers d’Art solidifies its connection with Japan through a noteworthy partnership with Hosoo, the esteemed silk fabric manufacturer for traditional kimonos. This collaboration, following LVMH’s recent agreement with denim specialist Kuroki, underscores the luxury conglomerate’s commitment to sourcing exceptional raw materials.
Founded in 1688 in Kyoto’s Nishijin district, Hosoo has been a beacon of excellence for twelve generations, supplying luxury houses like Chanel and Christian Dior, as well as prestigious hotels such as Bulgari and the Ritz. Specializing in traditional silk kimonos woven with the nishijin-ori craft technique, Hosoo’s legacy dates back to the 15th century, combining silk, gold, and silver threads in their creations.
The meticulous craftsmanship and traditional techniques intrinsic to Japanese textiles have captured the interest of the luxury giant, evident in its strategic partnerships with both Hosoo and Kuroki. These collaborations follow the establishment earlier this year of LVMH Métiers d’Art Japan, an entity dedicated to the development of Japanese craftsmanship and led by Emina Morioka.
Matteo De Rosa, CEO of the Métiers d’Art division, emphasizes the significance of the partnership, stating, «Hosoo’s control over the entire manufacturing process and its commitment to preserving traditional techniques while innovating in manufacturing and dyeing are particularly commendable. This collaboration marks the initiation of a long-term partnership.»
While LVMH has not acquired a stake in Hosoo, unlike some of its other partners, De Rosa clarifies that it is a commercial partnership with a long-term investment perspective. Hosoo, already a supplier to LVMH, will become a preferred partner for all the conglomerate’s brands. The collaboration aims to support Hosoo’s development and contribute to the revitalization of sericulture in Japan.
De Rosa concludes, «Our Métiers d’Art division houses leaders in their respective fields. Our goal is to sustain their excellence by fostering innovation and relevance. We provide them with an additional driving force, be it through investment, managerial support, or commercial backing.»
