Halston biopic premiers on Netflix

The much-anticipated limited series, ‘Halston,’ recently premiered on Netflix, offering a captivating glimpse into the life of the iconic fashion designer, Roy Halston Frowick, known simply as Halston.

Starring Ewan McGregor in the lead role, this five-episode mini-series is set against the vibrant backdrop of 1970s New York City. Produced by Emmy winner Ryan Murphy, renowned for his work on ‘Pose,’ ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace,’ and ‘American Horror Story,’ and skillfully directed by Daniel Minahan, the series delves deep into the swift rise and dramatic fall of the celebrated designer.

The narrative unfolds to portray Halston’s reinvention, pivotal business transactions, nights of extravagance at Studio 54, and days characterized by the opulent lifestyle of the era, including heavy cocaine use.

Nevertheless, the biopic has sparked controversy, with the late designer’s family expressing reservations. They contend that Murphy’s rendition takes significant creative liberties with the facts.

In an official press release, The Halston Archives and Family stated, «The Halston Archives and Family were not consulted on the upcoming Netflix series, which presents an inaccurate and fictionalized account of the famed fashion designer ‘Halston.'» They emphasized that the Halston Archives remains the definitive source on the man and his legacy, having been entrusted with his private papers and effects.

Responding to these concerns, The Halston Archives has announced the establishment of new fashion scholarships in Halston’s name. This initiative is designed to inspire and empower the next generation of American fashion designers. Additionally, they plan to launch a product line based on original artwork, with proceeds dedicated to funding the scholarship program.
