Dick’s Sporting Goods is strategically closing the majority of its Moosejaw stores, retaining just three key locations. This move is part of Dick’s parent company’s plan to enhance operational efficiency across its retail brands.
The three Moosejaw stores that will remain open are in Birmingham, Mich., Salt Lake City, and Bentonville, Ark. Regrettably, seven Michigan stores, along with one each in Olathe, Kan.; Chicago; Boulder, Colo.; and Kansas City, Mo., will cease operations.
This decision aligns with Dick’s Sporting Goods’ shift in focus towards other retail formats within its portfolio, including the House of Sport and Public Lands banners.
In an official statement, Dick’s explained, “Following a comprehensive review of our outdoor specialty business, we have chosen to merge our support for Public Lands and Moosejaw into a single team.» This consolidation will be headquartered at Public Lands’ base in Pittsburgh.
“This strategic move is in line with our ongoing efforts to optimize business operations, facilitating the efficient sharing of best practices across our outdoor business and ensuring long-term success.”
In February, Dick’s Sporting Goods acquired Moosejaw from Walmart for an undisclosed amount. Walmart had initially purchased Moosejaw for approximately $51 million in 2017.
In its most recent trading update, Dick’s reported a second-quarter net income decrease of 23 percent for the three months ending July 29, down to $244 million, despite a 4 percent increase in revenue to $3.22 billion.
