Italian luxury sneaker brand Philippe Model Paris is elevating its fashion line by welcoming Tuomas Merikoski, a Finnish designer and founder of Aalto, as its new Creative Director. With a track record of collaboration with top luxury brands, Merikoski’s appointment signifies a significant step for the brand.
Over the past two years, Philippe Model Paris has expanded its premium casual ready-to-wear offerings for both men and women. With Merikoski leading the creative direction, the brand aims to solidify its position as a lifestyle brand and further enhance its fashion offerings.
Merikoski’s debut collection for Philippe Model Paris is set for a grand reveal during the Fall/Winter 2024-25 season, following a return to a traditional seasonal schedule after experimenting with a ‘see now, buy now’ format.
Founded in the 1980s by the French colorist and accessories designer Philippe Model, the brand has undergone transformations over the years. In 2008, it was acquired by Italian designer Paolo Gambato and businessman Roberto Doro, who brought an Italian touch and craftsmanship to the brand by relocating manufacturing to Italy’s footwear hub in Veneto.
Hailing from Tampere, Finland, Merikoski initially pursued music and art but eventually transitioned to fashion. He earned a master’s degree from the French Fashion Institute and gained valuable experience at esteemed Parisian labels, including Givenchy and Louis Vuitton. In 2014, he gained recognition for launching the Aalto womenswear label, known for its contemporary Scandinavian elegance. Earlier this year, Merikoski relaunched Aalto as Aalto Recoded, focusing on sustainability and offering a blend of urban, functional wear, sport performance, and vintage pieces.
Stefano Di Nezza, who took the helm of Philippe Model Paris in May, emphasizes the brand’s objective of reconnecting with its fashion heritage. The brand boasts a rich history, with its founder collaborating with renowned Parisian fashion designers like Montana, Lanvin, and Jean Paul Gaultier in the 1980s and 90s. Di Nezza believes that Merikoski embodies the brand’s DNA with his creativity, architectural concepts, and strong ties to Paris. Additionally, Merikoski shares the brand’s commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
The appointment of Tuomas Merikoski as Creative Director marks a new chapter in Philippe Model Paris’s evolution, positioning the brand for growth and continued innovation in the luxury fashion industry.
