As the eagerly awaited moment approaches, the destiny of the esteemed French womenswear label-retailer, Kookaï, will be unveiled on November 29. Since entering receivership in February this year, the Paris trade court is set to disclose the identity of Kookaï’ s new proprietor among the seven enthusiastic bidders. Notably, the label has been in the hands of Australian businessman Rob Cromb since 2017.
The bids, subjected to meticulous scrutiny during a nearly four-hour hearing on November 15, now await the court’s decision. While there remains a slight chance of rejecting all bids, the improbable nature of such an outcome is emphasized by Kookaï’ s court-appointed receiver, given the high quality of the submitted proposals.
Two potential buyers have submitted comprehensive bids, expressing interest in acquiring all of Kookaï’ s assets. The first contender, AMH, recognized for owning the Antonelle and Un Jour Ailleurs fashion chains, aims to secure the label alongside its 16 directly owned stores, 17 retail corners, and 16 franchisees. The second full bid, submitted by Philippe Sayada in October (formerly in charge of accessories brand Aridza Bross), holds details that are currently less clear.
Meanwhile, partial bids focus on specific facets of Kookaï, such as the brand name or selected stores. The Beaumanoir group, for instance, seeks to acquire the brand name for online exploitation and eight stores, integrating them into its other chains like Bonobo and Bréal. Chloelina has bid for the brand name, the website, social media channels, and one store. Additionally, GD Distribution (owner of Gérard Darel and Pablo) and Ilva express interest in two stores each, while lingerie retailer Valège has submitted a bid for one stock-in-trade.
Established in 1983 in Paris’s Sentier district, Kookaï currently operates 31 stores and 35 retail corners across France, employing 232 individuals. Despite fiscal 2022 revenue reaching €35 million, a notable decrease from the €94.3 million recorded a decade ago in 2013-14, the upcoming transition signals a significant chapter in Kookaï’ s storied history. Stay tuned for the exciting developments on November 29 and witness the next phase of Kookaï’ s journey unfold!
