Chloé, the iconic fashion house, has announced Chemena Kamali as its new creative director, succeeding Gabriela Hearst, who recently concluded her tenure with the brand.
Born in Germany in 1981, Kamali may not be a household name in the fashion world like Hearst, but her impressive resume speaks for itself. She previously worked at Chloé, where she began her career as part of Phoebe Philo’s team. Later, she rejoined the brand as design director under Clare Waight Keller’s leadership in 2013. Her most recent role was as the Women’s Ready-to-Wear Design Director for Anthony Vaccarello at Saint Laurent.
In an official press release, Kamali expressed her deep connection to Chloé, saying, «My heart has always been Chloé’s. It has been since I stepped through its doors more than 20 years ago. Returning feels natural and very personal.»
Kamali’s first pre-collection for Chloé is set to debut in Paris in January 2024, followed by her Fall/Winter 2024 collection during Paris Fashion Week in February 2024.
Founded in 1952 by Gaby Aghion, Chloé has held a prominent place in Paris fashion, thanks to renowned designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Martine Sitbon, and Stella McCartney who have helmed the brand.
Kamali expressed her excitement about her new role, saying, «I am extremely honored to be taking on this role and to be building on the vision that Gaby Aghion and Karl Lagerfeld defined early in the Maison’s history. I hope to capture the emotional connection and spirit of Chloé for today.»
Kamali’s journey in fashion began with a master’s degree in fashion from Central Saint Martin’s University of the Arts in London, where she studied under the renowned Professor Louise Wilson. She graduated with distinction in 2007.
Riccardo Bellini, president & CEO of Chloé, expressed his confidence in Kamali, saying, «Her extraordinary creative talent, extensive experience, and unique connection with the brand’s legacy and values make her a natural choice for the Maison. Chemena’s vision, inspired by her love for the brand, will truly celebrate Chloé’s unique DNA.»
Chloé, part of the Richemont luxury conglomerate since 1985, has a rich history. Richemont’s portfolio includes esteemed fashion brands like Alaia, AZ Factory, and Dunhill, in addition to its renowned watch and jewelry brands.
Chemena Kamali’s return to Chloé marks a significant moment for the Maison, emphasizing her strong connection to the brand’s heritage and values.
Philippe Fortunato, CEO of the Fashion and Accessories division at Richemont, commented on Kamali’s return, saying, «Chloé is an important and much-loved part of Richemont. Chemena Kamali’s return is an exciting new chapter for the Maison given her passion for the brand’s heritage and her strong connection to Chloé.»
