According to PriceSpy’s data, an alarming 11% of Black Friday deals turned out to be deceptive. These misleading deals featured inflated prices between October 1st and the Sunday preceding Black Friday, only to conveniently ‘drop’ for the actual event. This deceptive trend saw a 1% increase from the previous year, prompting consumers to question the authenticity of the bargains encountered.
The deceptive web extended across categories, impacting 15% of sports and outdoor equipment and a remarkable 20% of skincare products. Additionally, 22% of products displayed higher prices on Black Friday compared to the start of November, with running shoes leading at 24%.
Despite these challenges, bright spots emerged in the Black Friday panorama. A notable 39% of products experienced genuine price reductions, with an average saving of 26%, mirroring figures from the previous year. Footwear emerged as the star performer, boasting a substantial 41% reduction.
Top Black Friday purchases included Beauty & Health and Home & Interior, consistent with 2022 trends. Fragrance, maintaining its popularity streak, stood out as one of the preferred product types.
Reflecting on the findings, Liisa Matinvesi-Bassett, UK Country Manager at PriceSpy, stated, «It’s refreshing to see that Black Friday shoppers were able to make bigger savings on a wider range of products than last year. However, it’s disappointing that we’ve seen fake sales gradually increase.»
