“Getting to Know the Guru of Style”

DEREK WARBURTON

Derek Warburton is a name that is synonymous with style. The celebrity style guru has dressed numerous notables including Anne Heche, Taryn Manning, Anthony Anderson, Jessica Alba and Mario Lopez. Warburton is also heavily involved in media and was currently named Editor-In-Chief for UK-based magazine British Thoughts. He is also the creative director of LaPalme Magazine, a digital and print lifestyle magazine focusing on the metropolitan world and owns and manages another lifestyle magazine called MRWARBURTON MAGAZINE. Currently based in California, Warburton will soon be launching GURUS, a celebrity wellness magazine, as well as The Gurus podcast.

In this interview, Warburton talks about where his passion for fashion began, the challenges with turning his passion into a viable career and what’s in store for the new year.

1.How’d you get your start in the fashion industry?

I got my first job in a clothing store in my local mall while still in high school in New Hampshire. I dreamed of being in fashion and I knew how to put clothes together on people. Because I was such a good seller, when I left my tiny town and moved to New York City to go to F.I.T (Fashion institute of Technology) I was able to transfer to another store within the company. I was a sales boy and did very well. That led to an internship at the main office working with a designer/buyer and my career was launched

2.Where does your passion for fashion stem from?

My passion stems from my childhood. I had a difficult upbringing and I was obsessed with fashion magazines. I worked at my local grocery store from the day I was old enough to have a job and I spent all of the tip money I made on buying magazines. I loved the art direction, the beauty of the models and of course, the clothes!

3.You also have your own business outside of fashion. What can you tell me about that?

I own MRWARBURTON MEDIA which is still small but constantly growing. We work with wellness gurus and help them grow their brands. We help with everything from PR to consulting and even special events. My background in media plus my party throwing panache has been invaluable. Along with all of that, I own and consult on many magazines, which makes MRWARBURTON MEDIA a much more secure firm that can deliver results.

4.What are some challenges you’ve faced with turning your passions into a viable career?

Some of the most difficult things with passion is making others believe in your work and also having them pay you for it. It takes a long time. I give speeches on the matter. One of the most common comments I hear from people is, “I don’t want to work for free anymore.” I can tell you some of my biggest successes in life came from working for “free.” It’s how you use the success that gets you paid.

5.You’re also really into charity work. What are some charitable endeavors you are currently involved with or have been involved with in the past?

I am passionate about helping the homeless and women in need. I have worked with thousands of women to help them get back on their feet. It is important to realize our own blessings and pay it forward in kindness. In 2016, the State of California named me the Style Ambassador of Los Angeles for my work with the homeless and those in need. It is an honor and I take it very seriously. Sometimes we just need a helping hand.

6.What is 2022 looking like for Derek Warburton?

Prosperity. I have now been in this business for 29 years. I have been able to weave and pivot through the best and the worst times. The difference now is that I know how to do it all in a more efficient way and the hard times are becoming less and less. 2022 is going to be the year of upward growth for me. I feel more settled than I ever have, which, for so many people, that slows them down. I thought that would happen to me and what I learned is that it sped me up. Along with MRWARBURTON MEDIA and MRWARBURTON MAGAZINE, I am the new editor in chief of British Thoughts Magazine, which I am very excited about, and I am about to launch GURUS Magazine which is not in fashion at all. It will have elements of style but be concentrating in the wellness space. Plus, my personal brand continues to expand and I have started doing television again and more appearances. But I think the biggest thing I am looking forward to is living my incredibly blessed life and creating for myself and others to enjoy.
