As part of a substantial £40 million multi-year investment project, this «next generation» upgrade underscores Fenwick’s enduring commitment to the city, coinciding with the store’s 140th-anniversary celebrations.
This ambitious project includes a revitalized facade on Northumberland Street, featuring an eye-catching new central entrance and a modern canopy. The ground floor windows will also undergo a stylish redesign, creating a more welcoming ambiance.
Fenwick’s Newcastle store has held a cherished place in the city since 1882. Leading the redesign of the frontage is architect Ben Mailen, deeply connected to the area. His team had the privilege of delving into Fenwick’s historic archives, drawing inspiration from the store’s evolution over the past 140 years.
The new storefront pays tribute to pivotal moments in Fenwick’s history, with features like the restoration of the central doors and curved shopfronts that were integral to the original design. It also honors the prominent canopy from the post-war years.
This major investment, announced in March, unfolds over the next five years, encompassing a comprehensive modernization of the entire store. Recent efforts have already included the creation of two new central atria and ongoing renovations in the beauty hall.
In September, Fenwick launched its inaugural advertising campaign, featuring powerful slogans like ‘Quiet no more’ and ‘Give them something to talk about.’ This move aims to connect with a new generation of customers.
Additionally, the group, operating nine stores across England, is considering the closure of its Bond Street, London, location. With rumors of its value exceeding £400 million, the proceeds from this sale will further fuel the revitalization of other Fenwick stores.
