Air New Zealand, impressed by Wickstead’s innovative concepts, chose her for the project, recognizing her as the designer for some of the world’s most prominent figures.
Leanne Geraghty, Chief Customer and Sales Officer of Air New Zealand, highlighted the rigorous selection process. With over 40 expressions of interest from New Zealand designers, Wickstead’s exceptional designs stood out, described as «creative, unique, [and] setting Air New Zealand apart globally.»
Geraghty emphasized Wickstead’s success in building a prestigious brand, stating, «Our people deserve to be dressed by the very best.» Wickstead, expressing a deep connection to Aotearoa, sees the project as a true passion. Her approach to the uniform is rooted in a profound respect for New Zealand’s cultural heritage and the transformative power of clothing.
Wickstead envisions the new uniforms as a source of pride and purpose for Air New Zealand’s exceptional team, aiming to create a distinctive look combining tradition with creative twists and innovation. The uniform selection criteria included sustainability, functionality, safety, and a focus on ‘te ao Māori,’ emphasizing the connection between nature and people.
Anticipating a late 2024 reveal, the final designs will undergo refinement, onboard trials, and wearer consultations. The Emilia Wickstead Air New Zealand uniforms will be gradually introduced to over 5,000 cabin crew, front-of-house ground staff, and pilots over the next few years, showcasing the airline’s commitment to stylish, functional, and culturally resonant attire for its dedicated team.
