Explore the captivating story of Hindbag, the leading French handbag brand that transcends fashion, making a significant impact on women’s professional integration in India. With the inauguration of its new flagship store at 53 Rue Notre-Dame-de-Lorette in Paris’ 9th arrondissement, founder Pierre Monnier, a visionary at 32, reflects on a year marked by remarkable growth and ethical milestones.
Originating from a visionary business school project in 2012, Hindbag’s partnership with the Swami Sivananda Memorial Institute (SSMI) has been the catalyst for positive change. By providing underprivileged women in Delhi with textile manufacturing jobs, Hindbag is fostering sustainability and empowerment.
The pivotal year came in 2020, during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hindbag responded by selling bags at cost price, supporting SSMI and proving the success of its strategic approach.
Today, SSMI impacts the lives of 200 women and educates 400 students, showcasing the profound impact of ethical business practices. The workshop, now a thriving hub, produces an astonishing 20,000 pieces per week, with 98% dedicated to Hindbag’s signature backpacks, fanny packs, and colorful pouches, and 2% preserving traditional Indian textile manufacturing techniques.
Hindbag’s success extends beyond its ethical foundation. With 80% of sales attributed to its GOTS-certified cotton bags, available through 600 retail points, the brand has captured the essence of conscious fashion. Even as it generates 20% of revenue through B2B channels, Hindbag continues to champion employment for less skilled women, contributing significantly to production volumes.
As Hindbag looks ahead, an inaugural collection of jackets and overshirts is set to launch in April. The brand is poised for international expansion, with a focus on Germany and the Benelux region. An independent and profitable venture since 2017, Hindbag remains open to external investments to fuel its initiatives, demonstrating resilience and commitment to ethical growth.
Sourcing GOTS-certified cotton from India, Hindbag maintains its promise of reasonably priced products, with an average basket cost of 45 euros. Monnier’s vision of making ethnic wear accessible to all is not just a statement—it’s a commitment to a changing landscape where fashion meets affordability.
