Éric Pfrunder, a prominent figure in the world of fashion photography and Karl Lagerfeld’s trusted collaborator, has sadly passed away at the age of 74.
As a key member of Lagerfeld’s inner circle, Pfrunder played an integral role in all of Lagerfeld’s photography endeavors, including projects for Chanel, Fendi, his own label, and various high-profile editorial assignments.
Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Chanel Fashion, expressed deep sorrow at the news, stating, «It is with profound sadness that the House of Chanel has learned of the passing of Éric Pfrunder, following a long illness. From 1983 to 2019, for nearly 36 years, Éric Pfrunder was an indispensable and active part of the creative trio he formed with Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard, contributing to establishing Chanel as the ultimate luxury fashion house.»
In a pivotal moment in 1987, Pfrunder was the one who suggested that Lagerfeld transition from look-books to full-fledged campaigns, forever changing the landscape of fashion photography. Subsequently, no photoshoot involving Lagerfeld was complete without Pfrunder’s presence, most notably at 7L, Karl’s renowned bookshop and photo studio located at 7 Rue de Lille on Paris’ Left Bank.
Pfrunder also played a vital role in assisting Lagerfeld’s transition from analog to digital photography, exploring innovative techniques in printing and photographic paper.
Born in Algeria in the 1950s, Pfrunder was known for his cosmopolitan background. After Lagerfeld’s passing in February 2019, Pfrunder assumed the role of joint artistic director of Chanel, working closely with the house’s creative director, Virginie Viard. His responsibilities encompassed overseeing advertising, marketing, films, events, and digital initiatives.
Following Lagerfeld’s demise, Pfrunder took on the significant task of curating Lagerfeld’s extensive archive, including campaigns, portraits, magazine shoots, and architectural studies. Notably, Pfrunder also ventured into the world of blockchain technology, joining the board of the startup Lukso.
Pavlovsky described Pfrunder as a man of unwavering conviction and loyalty, affectionately referring to him as «Vorarbeiter,» a German term for foreman that Lagerfeld used. Pfrunder’s profound contributions to Chanel were acknowledged, and heartfelt condolences were extended to his family and friends by the Chanel CEO.
With his tall and elegant demeanor, Éric Pfrunder will be remembered as a naturally graceful presence in the world of fashion, and his legacy as a legend in French fashion circles is celebrated by friends and colleagues who have begun sharing tributes on Instagram.
